1. Competition Overview

The Singapore Sands Art & Design Competition is a global design initiative launched by the Singapore Sands Art Museum, in collaboration with the Singapore Art Research Association (SGFARA) and the International Art Development Promotion Centre of SGFARA. The 2025 edition centers on the theme "Sustainability in Symbiosis," aligning with Singapore's Green Plan 2030 to inspire innovative solutions addressing climate change, resource circulation, and ecological conservation.

Three Core Missions:

  • Policy Implementation: Promote design practices supporting the five pillars of Green Plan 2030
  • Cross-disciplinary Innovation: Integrate visual communication, new technologies, and public spaces
  • Global Collaboration: Establish the Asia-Pacific Sustainable Design Alliance

The competition features a jury of international design experts, environmental specialists, and academics to ensure authority and foresight. Winners will receive substantial prizes, international exhibition opportunities, and industry connections.

2. Organizing Institutions

Singapore Art Research Association (SGFARA)

Leading green art and design research in Singapore, currently collaborating with the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment on the "Design for Green" Experimental Center.

Established in 2009, SGFARA has been dedicated to promoting and researching fine arts, providing a platform for art enthusiasts and professionals in Singapore and surrounding regions. As a non-profit organization, SGFARA upholds values of openness, inclusivity, innovation, and excellence. It has established multiple specialized art research centers covering painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, installation art, and more.

SGFARA International Art Development Promotion Centre

Promoting international design collaboration for Green Plan 2030, providing winners with pilot opportunities in Sentosa Eco Zone, Gardens by the Bay, and other locations.

Founded in 2015, the Centre focuses on researching international art development trends and promoting artistic exchange between Singapore and global communities. It plays a pivotal role in international art research, cultural exchange, artist support, and art education.

Theme 1: Regenerative Materials Lab

Explore innovative solutions for waste recycling, transforming discarded materials into valuable resources through design to advance circular economy.

Core Task: Develop waste regeneration solution with carbon footprint report

Theme 2: Climate-Adaptive Cities

Design urban systems resilient to climate challenges, reducing environmental disaster impacts while creating sustainable urban living environments.

Category: Architecture/Landscape Design

Core Task: Integrate "sponge community + solar road + smart irrigation" systems

Theme 3: Zero-Carbon Visual Revolution

Promote low-carbon lifestyles through visual design, enhance environmental awareness, and drive behavioral change toward carbon neutrality.

Category: Graphic/UI/Media Design

Theme 4: Biodiversity 2030

Design innovative solutions to protect urban biodiversity, creating habitats for endangered species and promoting human-nature coexistence.

Core Task: Urban ecological habitat monitoring devices for endangered species

Theme 5: Blue Economy Innovation

Explore sustainable use of marine resources, reduce ocean pollution, promote blue economy development, and protect marine ecosystems.

4. Non-propositional Competition

The non-propositional category encourages free creative expression, boundary-pushing concepts, and interdisciplinary innovation. While no specific theme is imposed, all entries must embody sustainability principles and demonstrate fusion of art and technology.
